Some paintings are a gift. This one I gave to myself — finished on my 28th birthday, in the month of pearls. Completed in June, this piece carries the quiet magic of that month — pearls are the birthstone of June, and they are woven into the heart of every bloom on this canvas, luminous and soft against the deep crimson of the poppies I have come to call my own.
This painting is about finding my pink again. As a little girl, I had hot pink carpet — bold, unapologetic, entirely my own. Somewhere along the way, I grew up and traded it in for something more sensible. This painting is the moment I stopped being sensible about it. The folk patterns, the butterflies, the blooms — all of it reaches toward joy, toward softness, toward the girl I once was and the woman I am still becoming. It was my husband's love — steady, generous, and unwavering — that made space for that return. He saw the pink in me before I remembered it was there, and this painting exists, in part, because of that.
It is also a painting about connection — to my parents, to the love that shaped me, to the roots that hold me even when I forget they are there. Pearls, after all, are not found. They are formed — slowly, quietly, through layers of time and pressure — until something luminous emerges.
"This painting is for the version of you that is still finding her way back to pink."
