Петушок

Петушок centers on the traditional Russian rooster-shaped sugar candy, transforming a small and fleeting object of childhood into something preserved through paint.

Rendered in luminous reds against a deep black ground, the rooster appears suspended between object and memory. The crimson and scarlet palette references the candy's translucent, jewel-like quality while drawing upon red as a recurring color within Russian visual culture. Against it, black creates both contrast and absence, allowing the form to emerge almost as an artifact recovered from darkness. A restrained blue edge introduces the porcelain-inspired visual language that moves throughout Echoes of Olja, quietly connecting this individual work to the larger series.

For me, the petushok carries an additional complexity. It belongs to the culture of my Russian beginnings, yet not to a childhood memory I can clearly recall. I encountered the object later, through the process of researching and reconnecting with a history that began before my adoption.

Rather than attempting to recreate a memory that may no longer exist, I paint the object itself.

In doing so, Петушок considers how ordinary cultural objects can become vessels for something far larger—heritage, nostalgia, absence, and the human desire to understand where we began.

This painting will come unframed; however, it is painted on the sides. If you choose to frame, every piece can be installed in a frame that you purchase on your own or you have professionally done.

All original paintings are signed by Jessica Tackett on the back of the artwork only. There will be my signature, date, and title of the artwork. Remember, original artwork holds its value well and increases over time!
